Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan said the New York State Public Service Commission is investigating Central Hudson’s customer information system and billing practices.

It comes after the Democrat called for such an investigation. Ryan says thousands of customers have expressed concerns ranging from bills not being received for months, to grossly overstated bills, to large automatic withdrawals from customer accounts without notice. The public service has been under intense scrutiny from state and local authorities for months. State Assemblyman Kevin Cahill said the company makes excuses for the delays.

In a statement to WAMC, Central Hudson said it was working to resolve issues that arose during the replacement of its nearly 40-year-old customer service system.

“We understand that this is a survey conducted by PSC staff alongside the management audit, which takes place every five years,” said Joe Jenkins, associate director of media relations. from Central Hudson. “We look forward to working with the Civil Service Commission and the independent consultancy firm as part of their management audit and investigation. Central Hudson is implementing a new customer service platform to replace a nearly 40-year-old legacy system to meet the complex and changing needs of our industry and customer expectations. During the transition to this new system, we encountered challenges that we are actively working to resolve. We expect the vast majority of affected customers to have corrected invoices in hand and be back to their normal billing cycle by the end of April. Recent price increases for energy and other goods have created a financial burden for all New Yorkers. Central Hudson offers payment options and financial assistance to customers, and covers energy purchases to help mitigate market price volatility. We are committed to doing everything we can to help our customers and look forward to working with state regulators to address rising market prices for energy.
